What Are Vape Mods?

As vaping becomes increasingly popular, the catalog of available e-cigarettes continues to expand. Just a few years ago, most vapers used simple disposable e-cigarettes (vape pens). Today, vaping has become a fully customizable experience, where users can control every aspect — from the flavor of the e-liquid to the thickness of the vapor.

For those drawn to personalizing their experience, more advanced devices known as vape mods are often the preferred choice. But what exactly are these devices, and how do they differ from simpler alternatives?

In this blog post, we’ll explain what a vape mod is, the main types available on the market, and how they differ in features and operation, so you can choose the right vape mod for your needs.

What Is a “Mod”?

The term “mod” is short for “modified device.”

It originates from the early days of vaping, when the market offered fewer options and enthusiasts who wanted more power or intensity than commercially available devices would modify existing e-cigarettes or even build their own from scratch, sometimes using parts from fans and other components.

Today, manufacturers produce powerful, multifunctional devices, so DIY modifications are less common. However, the term “mod” remains in use.

Vape mods generally refer to larger, more powerful, and more functional e-cigarettes than standard devices — essentially, modern reusable e-cigarettes.

Main Types of Vape Mods

Vape mods can be divided into several main categories, each with unique features that appeal to different users. There is no “best” mod — the right choice depends on your personal preferences and vaping style.

1. Regulated Mods (Box Mods)

The most common type of rechargeable e-cigarette today. Usually shaped like a small box or an old-fashioned matchbox.

  • Features: Display screen showing battery level, wattage, voltage, and resistance (ohms)
  • Variable Wattage (VW): Adjust power to control vapor production and flavor intensity
  • Temperature Control (TC): Prevents coil overheating and unpleasant taste; requires compatible coil material (nickel, titanium, stainless steel)
  • Safety features: Short-circuit protection, overheat protection, low battery warning
  • Vaping style: Universal — suitable for both Direct-to-Lung (DTL) and Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) inhaling, depending on coil and tank specifications. High-power models are generally more suitable for DTL.
  • Compatible liquids: Depends on the mod. Works with high VG e-liquids (70% VG / 30% PG) or balanced 50/50 VG/PG liquids, including nicotine salts. Check resistance limits and coil type for sub-ohm vaping.
  • Ideal user: Intermediate vapers looking for more customization.

2. Mechanical Mods (Mech Mods)

A throwback to classic vaping. These have no electronic chips, screens, or safety features — the battery is directly connected to the atomizer.

  • Features: Power depends entirely on battery charge and coil resistance. Requires knowledge of the Ohm’s law and battery safety to avoid accidents.
  • Vaping style: Produces very large, dense clouds of vapor.
  • Compatible liquids: High VG (70/30 or 80/20 VG/PG). Low nicotine (3mg) or nicotine-free e-liquids recommended. High PG liquids are not advised due to leakage risk.
  • Ideal user: Expert vapers only — requires advanced knowledge of batteries, Ohm’s law, and coil building. Not recommended for beginners.

3. Pod Mods

A hybrid between standard pod systems and regulated mods. Pod mods retain the interchangeable pod cartridges of standard systems but offer more features and power, making them popular among younger users or those who value convenience and customization.

  • Features: More compact than box mods, yet more powerful than standard pod systems. Adjustable airflow, power, and often larger batteries. Some models include screens.
  • Vaping style: Depends on coil type and resistance.
  • Compatible liquids: Low-power coils work best with high PG liquids, including nicotine salts, while high-power models are suitable for high VG liquids (70/30 VG/PG).
  • Ideal user: Beginners and intermediate users who want simplicity and convenience without sacrificing customization. Experienced users may also choose pod mods for ease of use.

There are also unregulated mods, which provide some basic safety features but no adjustable settings. They are less commonly used today.

At specialized vape shops, you’ll find a wide selection of vape mods and experienced consultants who can help you choose the optimal device for your needs.
