Using an E-Cigarette: A Beginner’s Guide

The market offers a wide variety of e-cigarettes in different types, sizes, and designs — from standard cigarette-like models (“cigalikes”), pod systems, and pen-style devices (vape pens) to larger, more powerful units (mods).

Today, replacing traditional cigarettes with vapes has become very popular. However, many beginners often have an unpleasant first experience because they don’t fully understand the device they are using, leading to mistakes when choosing a model.

In this blog, we’ll explain what an e-cigarette is, what new users should consider when selecting their first device, and how to avoid common mistakes.

What Is an E-Cigarette and How Does It Work?

An e-cigarette, or vape, is a battery-powered device that heats a special liquid and turns it into vapor — all without burning tobacco. In vaping, getting a dose of nicotine is often secondary.

Despite the variety of models, most e-cigarettes have similar basic components:

  • Battery – the power source for the device, often built-in for beginner models
  • Atomizer/Cartridge/Pod – holds the e-liquid
  • Coil – the heating element (wire or mesh) that vaporizes the liquid
  • E-liquid – the liquid used in the vape, usually made of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), flavorings, and sometimes nicotine
  • Mouthpiece – the part from which you inhale the flavored vapor

When activated, the battery powers the coil, which heats and vaporizes the e-liquid in the pod or atomizer for inhalation.

Which Type of E-Cigarette Should You Start With?

When starting out, simplicity and comfort should be your priority. Today, many devices offer advanced features for experienced vapers who want full control over their vaping experience. For beginners, these extra functions can be confusing. Ideal starter devices include:

  • Pod Systems: The most popular choice for beginners. Compact, lightweight, often draw-activated (no button required). Simple and easy to use; some come with pre-filled cartridges. Disposable pods are single-use; refillable pods allow longer use and cost savings.
  • All-in-One (AIO) Devices: Basic devices combining battery and tank in one unit. Similar to pod systems in functionality, but often with larger battery and liquid capacity. Good for those who want slightly more performance while keeping simplicity.
  • Vape Pens: Pen-shaped, often with a larger battery than pod systems. Usually a single button for easy activation. Produces slightly more vapor than pod systems. Simple construction allows beginners to refill tanks and replace coils.

What to Consider When Buying an E-Cigarette

  • Nicotine strength: Choose a level that satisfies your cravings without being overwhelming; adjust as needed.
  • PG/VG ratio: E-liquid consists of two main components – Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). Their ratio determines compatibility with devices. PG gives a stronger throat hit; VG produces more vapor. Beginners often do best with 50/50 or slightly higher PG liquids.
  • Vaping style (MTL vs DTL): Most beginners prefer MTL (cigarette-like inhaling), which pod systems and vape pens usually support. DTL (direct-to-lung) creates more vapor and requires more powerful devices, which are not recommended for beginners.
  • Quality and reliability: Purchase devices and liquids from trusted, specialized stores. Reliable devices last longer and provide a better experience. Reusable devices require maintenance; coils and tanks should be replaced regularly, and the device should be cleaned periodically.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

    • Starting with a complex device: Begin with a simple pod system or vape pen to learn the basics before moving to vape mods.
    • Incorrect nicotine level: Too low, and you’ll constantly crave vaping; too high may cause dizziness, nausea, or headaches.
    • Neglecting device maintenance: Coils and pods wear out, affecting flavor and vapor. Replace coils every 1–3 weeks depending on usage, and clean reusable devices regularly to prevent liquid buildup, which can spoil the taste of new e-liquid.
    • Ignoring safety guidelines: Use only the charger provided, do not leave the device charging overnight, and avoid extreme temperatures (devices are vulnerable to both heat and cold). Replace the device if physically damaged.

_

    • Using the wrong PG/VG ratio: Thick, high VG liquids may cause dry hits in simple devices; very thin, high PG liquids may leak. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations or ask a consultant.
    • “Dry hits”: Occurs when the coil is insufficiently saturated, producing a burnt cotton taste. Always ensure the tank has enough liquid and allow new coils 5–10 minutes to soak.

T

  • Buying low-quality products: It’s tempting to buy cheap devices or liquids, but this often leads to a bad experience. Low-quality liquids can have a bad taste, and cheap devices break or malfunction quickly.
